Chapter 19

Nikki took Charles and Clara with her to the police department. She left Roderick at her apartment to monitor the news and keep an eye on Zeus. Not that Zeus needed tending to, but he seemed to prefer having some form of attention or he began clawing and chewing on things.

When they arrived at the department, Nikki had them stay in the car as she went to the front desk and asked for Captain Hayes. Hayes was the new night shift commander and in the past few months had been receptive to Nikki’s knowledge of vampires and other creatures. While it hadn’t been needed recently, she hoped he would be willing to listen to her now.

When he came out, he saw Nikki and walked over to her. He was about her height, and balding on top. For some reason, he didn’t shave his head at the first sign of balding like a lot of officers.

“Hi, captain,” she said. “Thank you for seeing me.”

“I’m amazed you came here after that fiasco the other night.”

“Why is everyone blaming me for that? I told them it was a terrible idea, and if they were going to do it, crosses and crossbows wouldn’t do a damn thing. No one listened.”

“I’m sure you did warn them. The Chief is beside himself, though. You know he’s not going to take the blame.”

“Not much I can do. I’m not part of your guys’ politics. The thing is, things are about to get worse.”

“Worse?”

“Can you come outside with me? I want you to meet someone,” Nikki said.

They walked out to the car where Charles and Clara were waiting. When he saw Charles, he froze.

“You brought a vampire here,” Hayes said. “What is going on?”

“Arthur, the master vampire, is planning something,” Charles said. “Something big.”

“Like how big?? Hayes asked.

“He’s said the humans declared war on the vampires last night. He said blood will flow and we’ll be there to drink every last drop.”

“Oh my God…what about that giant killer bat?”

“Ezekiel?” Charles said. “He is an old vampire. The one the construction workers awakened.”

“He’s the one who started all this. Originally, Arthur was concerned about him and wanted me to help stop him,” Nikki said.

“He didn’t know the humans would attack all of us.”

“He should have expected as much. Humans don’t differentiate. A vampire starts mutilating people in the streets, they assume vampires are bad. You’ve not followed enough of our wars over the years to know that?” Nikki said. “Then again, most of your human memories are gone, so maybe it hasn’t occurred to you.”

“Why can that one fly?” Hayes asked. “Can all of you sprout wings and fly like that?”

“He is very old and powerful. He’s the first one I’ve even heard of flying. Up until I saw him, I had no idea that was possible.”

“So, how do we get Arthur not to attack?” Hayes asked.

“I don’t know if you can. Best you can do is try to stop him before he attacks,” Charles said. “Though, I don’t condone killing more vampires.
